Description
Orvis Solunagraph is a rare 1970s Heuer chronograph with a tide indicator designed for sailors, fishermen and hunters.

In the 20th century, Heuer was known for its robust and waterproof chronographs. In addition to the three-register chronographs, also special timepieces such as the Solunagraph with a tide display were produced. Due to the orbit of the moon and the rotation of the earth around its own axis, the tides are different every day. The sub register at 9 o'clock was a helpful tool for the fishermen and hunters to realize the appropriate hunting period. On the tachymetre bezel the sailors could also read the speed of their sailing ships.

Heuer entered into a cooperation with the renowned outdoor retailer Orvis and produced the Solunagraph, which was retailed by Orvis. Hence the name on the dial. This is the second execution of the Solunagraph with the wave lines on the tide sub dial. The additional pusher at 9 o'clock controls the tide sub dial.

The bezel of this particular Solunagraph has a special tachymeter scale. The usual tachymeter bezels show markings of high speeds between 60 and 400 units per hour, which are useful on a racetrack. The Solunagraph, however, was designed for sailors. The speed of the sailing ships on the water are lower. Therefore, it made more sense to design a tachymeter scale to meet these special needs. That's why unusual speed range (40-120 units per hour) was used for the Solunagraph. There is also an hour / minute version of the bezel. However, the tachymeter bezel is much rarer.

The overall condition of this watch is exemplary. The 40mm stainless steel case is a real eye-catcher: it is robust, unpolished and has few natural signs of wear. A condition that vintage watch collectors desire. The dial has an aluminum-black finish that has been perfectly preserved. The luminous material in the hour markers, hands and even in the small dots at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock is fully intact. The bezel is in a great condition.

The reference and serial numbers between the lugs are easy readable. The original crown is correctly signed with the Heuer logo. The watch comes with an original Heuer-signed clasp.

This Solunagraph is equipped with the movement Valjoux 723. In fact, it is a Valjoux 72 movement with an extra module for the tide function, indicated by the additional "3". The movement is housed in a compressor case with a snap-on case back.

It's a complicated chronograph with some special features and a cool sporty look. The Orvis Solunagraph is today a coveted and rare collector's watch.
