Interview about the Vintage Watch Market in I/2018 with the founder of WatchPool24 - Franz Roman

Franz Roman - Interview
How do you see the vintage watch market in the first quarter of 2018?
The year 2018 has started quite calm. In my opinion, one can find the reason for that in the last year. 2017 has been an auction-packed year with many highlights. Collectors and potential buyers had to deal with this first. Many ask themselves questions like: which direction will the prices go? Should I buy or sell? This created some confusion at the beginning of the year, which made buyers and sellers to hold off. In February, the market has become more impulsive again. The Miami watch shows were successful for many dealers. The Parma Watch Fair at the end of February started slow due to the unexpected snow chaos in the Northern of Italy. But over the entire show, the dealers were very satisfied with the demand.

What kind of watches are being most wanted?
Currently, the vintage watches of renowned brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe are very strong. Over the years you can see that the collectors always go back to the known, stable brands. But regardless of the brand, the collectors are looking for the perfect condition of the watch today. If the condition of the watch leaves nothing to be desired, the buying decision is pretty easyly made. Those perfect watches get exorbitantly higher prices compared to the same models in average condition.

What do you think about the price development of the Rolex Daytona?
Right now, we are in an interesting period between the Paul Newman's "Paul Newman" auction in October 2017 and the Daytona Ultimatum auction on May 12th, 2018. Everybody talks about the vintage manual-wound Daytonas and the "Zenith" Daytonas. Some people think prices for the vintage Daytonas will go down after the Philips auction. But I believe that the Daytona Ultimatum will be a huge success, driving the demand and the prices even higher. Whether young or old, rich or poor, watch collectors or not - absolutely everyone knows the Rolex Daytona and everyone wants to own a Rolex Daytona.

How do you see the current Heuer market?
Since the Philipps Heuer auction in November 2017, the vintage Heuer market feels weaker. Currently, many Heuer watches are offered in an average condition for a relatively high price. But if you take a closer look at the market, you find that from time to time extremely good Heuer watches pop up at realistic prices. 6 to 8 months ago there was not a slightest chance to see these kind of Heuer on the market. I think now it's a very good time to buy Vintage Heuer watches in perfect condition.

How do you see the Heuer watch market in the near future?
At the moment, the Heuer collectors are experiencing a phase that has been normal in the Rolex vintage market for 20 years. The prices of two identical models may differ by 200 to 300 percent due to their condition. For Example, a Rolex James Bond Ref. 5508 in average condition can be found for 20,000.00 euros. For the same reference in top condition one has to pay up to 80,000.00 euros. However, I believe that the demand for vintage Heuer watches will increase again from the middle to the end of the year because many watch enthusiasts are still up for this colorful racing brand.

What can you say about other watch brands?
It's the same with top-class brands such as Zenith, Breitling and Universal Genève. Watches in perfect condition are very sought-after, but the demand for average watches is lower. Above all, the market for Universal Genève watches from the 60s has risen significantly. At the same time collectors do not want to sell their best watches, which makes finding a good UG very difficult at the moment.

How do you see the trend of the old chronos of "no-name" brands?
Old Chronos from 1950s have been in an upward trend for two years. However, the buyers are currently very picky. The sought-after models are large diameters, steel cases, screw-down case backs and black galvanic or special dials.

Conclusion:
When you buy a vintage watch, the rarity, the condition and the look play an increasingly important role. If a collector has to make a decision, he often chooses the perfect condition watch even if he has to accept a much higher price. Thus, the price gap between perfect and average watches will continue to diverge in 2018.
