Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz 17000

rare MK1 execution - unpolished case

Description
This is a Rolex Datejust Oyster Quartz 17000 from 1979. This vintage watch with its quartz movement marks a historic milestone of the Rolex brand.

In the early 1970s and 1980s, the trend in the watchmaking business was towards less expensive and more precise quartz calibers rather than more intricate mechanical movements.

In the 70s and 80s, the less expensive and more precise quartz watches were getting more popular. The manufacturers of complicated mechanical watches were suddenly in a crisis, which is also called quartz crisis. With the Datejust Oysterquartz, Rolex demonstrated that the company can keep up with the latest trends in the watch market. In 1972 Rolex started the development of its own quartz caliber. 5 years later - in 1977 - the brand introduced the quartz caliber 5035 for the Datejust. In 2003 the production of the Rolex Oysterquartz came to an end. Despite the long production period, fewer than 25,000 Oysterquartz examples were produced. In the world of Rolex it's a small number, making the Oysterquartz Datejust one of the rarest Rolex models.

Here we offer an early and rare example of the Rolex Oysterquartz from 1979. Well-known nicknames for this execution are Pre-COSC, Mark 1 or Three-Liner. The dial of the MK1 version shows just the word Oysterquartz at 6 o'clock. The later versions have additionally the inscription "Superlative Chronometer Officialy Certified".

The watch was rarely worn and is therefore in excellent condition. The stainless steel case is unpolished. The reference and serial numbers are clearly visible on the case back. The silver dial shows some patina points and is absolutely authentic. The movement of the caliber 5035 is in perfect working order. The stainless steel oyster bracelet is original and has also been beautifully preserved.

The Datejust Oyster Quartz is an unusual Rolex watch and marks a significant time period of the company with a long tradition. Here you have the opportunity to buy a wonderful specimen of this Rolex-Vintage-Model.
