The first Tudor Big Block was presented in 1976. It was the very first Tudor chronograph with an automatic movement from the house of Wilsdorf, which also includes Rolex. This innovative development was an important milestone in the history of the chronograph and helped Tudor to consolidate its position at the forefront of Swiss chronograph manufacturers. The newly introduced automatic Caliber Valjoux 7750 even had the quickset date mechanism. In order to accommodate the new movement and the rotor in the case, it had to be made bigger and higher. In collectors circles this led to the nickname "Big Block".
In the late 1980s, the reference 79160 was introduced, that still had the big block case. There were dial changes of an aesthetic nature. This particular watch has a charismatic panda dial. Thanks to the unusual arrangement of the sub-dials, the watch has a high recognition value. The dial contains the inscriptions "Oysterdate" next to the date and "Automatic - Chrono Time" in an arc above the lower hour counter.
This Tudor Oysterdate 79160 dates back to 1994 and has been preserved in excellent overall condition. The dial is absolutely flawless. The tritium luminescent is original and intact. The black bezel has a tiny blemish at 6 o'clock, which is barely visible. Otherwise, the bezel is absolutely perfect. The case is sharp and has the original beveled lugs. The Oyster bracelet is in excellent condition with very slight signs of wear. The bracelet reference is 78360, end links reference is 589 and clasp code is R5. The movement is in perfect working order and the chronograph starts, stops and resets correctly. The date quickset works fine.
The collector's highlight of this watch is the original punched guarantee certificate, showing the original purchase on July 29, 1994 in Italy. In addition, the watch is accompanied by a Tudor box, a leather card holder and the guarantee translation.
This Tudor Big Block is a valuable collector's watch with its own identity and excellent mechanical quality.
