This Breitling Cosmonaute 809 is a legendary aviator chronograph with a 24-hour dial. This specimen dates from 1971 and has an unpolished case.
The Breitling Cosmonaute 809 was first presented in 1962 and has remained a true Breitling classic to this day. The Breitling Cosmonaute owes its fame to the American astronaut Scott Carpenter, who took this chronograph on his three-orbit flight around the earth. One of the reasons for this decision was certainly the 24-hours dial, which proved to be a practical feature for a space travel. Is it 6 am or 6 pm? That question can be confusing in the deep darkness of the outer space. After a look at the Breitling Cosmonaute this question was answered immediately. Additionally, the Breitling's famous slide rule was also a popular tool for astronauts and pilots. And of course this watch is a chronograph as well.
We are absolutely fascinated by the excellent condition of this particular Breitling Cosmonaute 809 from 1971. The stainless steel case is unpolished and has sharp edges and crisp engravings on the case back. For a nearly 50 years old wristwatch it is a pretty remarkable condition. Over the years, the black dial and white sub dials gained some natural patina spots, giving this vintage watch a very honest character. The hour digits are beautifully aged and have a dark green lume that has never been relumed and is 100% original. At 12 o'clock you can see the two-plane logo of Breitling and the inscription "Breilting Geneve" and "Cosmonaute". The winding crown correctly carries the "B" of Breitling. The movement of this chronograph is the manual winding caliber Venus 178, which is in perfect working order.
This Breitling Cosmonaute 809 is a true legend of aviation watches. The excellent condition makes this specimen a dream for many vintage collectors.
