Berthoud Geneve Chronograph 5182

This old Berthoud chronograph from the 1940s has an elegant look and a reliable movement from Universal Genève.

It is no coincidence that this vintage watch is equipped with a Universal Genève movement. After the founding of Universal Genève in 1894, the brand established itself as a manufacturer of reliable and exceptional watches. Louis Eduoard Berthoud was a well-known designer of complicated movements. He worked for Universal Genève from 1897. This secured the company supremacy in the development of complicated watches in the 20th century. Under the leadership of Berthoud, the Compax and Compur models were developed, which cemented the brand's reputation as a chronograph manufacturer. Similar to Longines and Wittnauer, the Universal Genève watches had a different name outside of Switzerland. For example, from the 1920s to the 1940s, Berthoud watches were sold in countries such as the Netherlands, New Zealand, France and South Africa.

The design of the present chronograph shows a clear layout and a "calm" elegance. On the dark dial you will find the logo at 12 o'clock, a chapter ring with minute markings, silver-colored Arabic numerals and two subdials. The small seconds subdial is at 9 o'clock and the chronograph's 45-minute counter at 3 o'clock. Both subdials feature an fine ring. The black dial surface has a beautiful patina, that beautifully reflects the old age of this vintage chronograph.

The 35mm stainless steel case has only a few signs of wear and is in superb condition overall, especially when you consider the age of this watch. The two chronograph pushers have an elongated shape, which was typical for the old chronos of the 1940s and 50s. The movement of this Berthoud is the 385 manual wind caliber 385 from Universal Genève. The same movement was used in the well-known models such as Universal Genève Compax. This watch has been checked by our watchmaker and runs perfectly in all functions.
