Rolex Cosmograph Reference 6238 is the mother of all Daytonas. That is why this vintage watch is nicknamed Pre-Daytona.
Produced between 1963 and 1967, the Pre-Daytona is one of the rarest Rolex vintage watches. It was the last Rolex chronograph with a tachymeter scale on the dial. In the late 1960s, the Cosmograph 6238 was replaced by the Daytona reference 6239.
The specialty of this particular watch is not only the excellent condition, but also the extremely rare dial, which experts call "Gunmetal". The gray hue of the Gunmetal dial is darker and deeper than the silver dial, which is more common with this reference. It is known from several sources that the Gunmetal dial appears in the watches with serial numbers in the 1.2 million range. The serial number of the Pre-Daytona offered here matches this range.
Despite the old age of 55 years, this Pre-Daytona is in fantastic overall condition. The sunburst dial is almost flawlessly preserved, with the exception of a few tiny spots that can only be seen under a magnifying glass. The tritium lume is original and not restored or repainted. The stainless steel case has a thick profile and well defined lugs.
The Pre-Daytona 6238 is powered by the legendary Valjoux 72 chronograph movement, which is also the heart of the manual wind Daytonas. As you would expect from this extremely reliable movement, the chronograph offered here runs absolutely flawlessly and accurately. The movement has a ROW stamp. This is an indication that the watch was sold in the United States. The watch is accompanied by the original riveted Rolex Oyster bracelet, which is marked with Rolex USA. The bracelet is in excellent condition and shows little stretch. The clasp is signed 1/70.
This Rolex Cosmograph 6238 is a top notch collectors watch due to its historical importance, its rare configuration and its excellent condition.
