Description
This extraordinary Longines Nonius 8271 dates from the early 1970s and can measure time to a tenth of a second.

In competitive sports, fractions of a second often decide between victory and defeat - even back in the 60s and 70s, when there was no way to digitally measure the time. In 1964 Longines presented a mechanical wristwatch to feature a central chrono seconds hand with a so-called Nonius scale attached to its tip. This length scale is also called the Vernier scale because of its inventor, Pierre Vernier. But in most countries the name "Nonius" has become common. This name goes back to the scientist Pedro Nunes, who was known for the further development and simplification of the Vernier scale.

The use of this particular chronograph starts as usual by pressing the top pusher. After stopping the chronograph, the user has to read off which of the nine orange vernier digits is aligned with the 60-second scale. This value is added to the number of seconds to the left of the seconds hand and you then get a time that is accurate to a tenth of a second. With the development of this impressive wristwatch, Longines cemented its important position among manufacturers of innovative and precise timepieces.

The peculiarity of the present example is without a doubt the mint NOS condition. The case back still bears the original manufacturer's sticker. The watch is almost unworn. The case has razor-sharp edges and the original sunburst finish. The silver dial has three sub-registers - small seconds at 9 o'clock, 30-minute counter with a black ring at 3 o'clock and 12-hour totalizer at 6 o'clock. Of course, the dial is immaculate and has no imperfections.

The heart of this Longines Nonius is the rare Longines caliber 332, which is based on the Valjoux 726.

This Longines Nonius 8271/2 is an innovative vintage chronograph that has been preserved in impressive condition.
