In addition to its rarity and beautiful design, this Certina Argonaut 8401-501 impresses with its almost new condition - or in vintage technical jargon "NOS".
In contrast to the other well-known Certina chronographs, the Argonaut Chronos were only produced for a short time, between 1968 and 1972. This chronograph has a striking rectangular case. The surfaces show the original finish, the edges are razor-sharp and the engravings on the case back are deep. These characteristics suggest that this watch was never polished.
The black and white reverse panda dial is also immaculately preserved. A tachymeter scale up to 400 units per hour is attached to the silver outer ring. The two sub-dials at 3 and 9 o'clock have the same silver hue. Together with the black base color, it creates a very beautiful, high-contrast look. The chronograph minute counter at 3 o'clock shows red accents. The large hour markers contain original tritium lume. Every single tritium dot is completely intact.
For their chronographs, Certina used tried-and-tested movements. For this particular chronograph it was the Valjoux 23. This movement has been modified by Certina and given the caliber 29-063. The movement keeps accurately time and is extremely robust and reliable.
It can be said with certainty that this Certina is almost unworn. Together with its rarity and a beautiful look, this chrono qualifies as a valuable collector's item.
