Heuer Carrera 1158 S

This is an extremely rare 18 carat Heuer Carrera 1158S from 1970.

Jack Heuer presented this golden version of the automatic Carrera in the early 1970s. According to multiple reports, about 150 pieces were produced until the late 1970s. Some chronographs were handed over to the Ferrari Formula 1 drivers. Today the Heuer Carrera 1158 is one of the rarest Heuer vintage watches.

The present watch is one of the first executions of the golden Heuer Carrera. The case has a very early serial number 174xxx. The cases in this serial number range were produced in 1969 and were fitted with the "CHRONOMATIC" dials. After only about 6 months, Heuer was not allowed to use the model name "CHRONOMATIC" due to a legal dispute with Breitling. The cases were still in use and one of them you can see here. The early serial number also explains why this watch is equipped with caliber 11 rather than the later caliber 12. All in all this watch is ultra rare and special.

The Carrera on offer has an early silver dial design with two sub-registers and a date window at 6 o'clock. The applied golden hour markers have two black stripes creating a fine contrast. The hands are also made of gold and have black edges, luminous inlays and black triangular tips. The large black inlay on the marker at twelve o'clock is another special feature of this rare dial execution. Overall, the watch has a very stylish and harmonious appearance.

The excellent condition of this Heuer Carrera makes it even rarer and more valuable than the reference 1158 already is. Everything down to the last detail is authentic. The luxurious 18k yellow gold case has sharp edges and, in our opinion, it has remained unpolished. The dial is very nicely preserved. The only flaw that should be mentioned is a light scratch over the date window.

The heart of this Heuer Carrera is the legendary and celebrated caliber 11, which was one of the very first automatic chronograph movements in the world. The chronograph operates perfectly in all functions.
