We love the timeless elegance and the balanced aesthetics of this Patek Philippe reference 3970 - chronograph and perpetual calendar with moon phase display.
Introduced in 1986, the 3970 was the youngtimer successor who followed in the footsteps of the vintage references 1518 and 2499 - the "Holy Grails" of the watch industry. The expectations of the collectors for the new perpetual calendar were therefore pretty high. But of course, the reference 3970 was a full success. How could it be otherwise when the decades of watchmaking take shape in a timepiece. The new model managed the perfect balancing act between the vintage-retro design and a modern wristwatch. The reference 3970 was produced until 2004 and is increasingly becoming the focus of today's collectors.
The white gold example offered here dates from 2002 and is accompanied by its original full set. It is the last of the four versions of the reference 3970 with a screwed sapphire crystal case back and an additional white gold back. The silver dial features three sub-registers and is wonderfully balanced despite the large amount of information and does not appear overloaded. The running seconds and the 24-hour display are located at 9 o'clock. The 30-minute counter of the chronograph, together with the leap year display, is located at 3 o'clock. The sub-dial at 6 o'clock accommodates the radial date display and the moon phase. The day of the week or the month is displayed in English in the two apertures at 12 o'clock.
The dial is absolutely flawless and clean. The 36mm white gold case has rarely been worn and has almost certainly remained unpolished. All gold hallmarks on the back of the case are deeply engraved. Overall, this Patek 3970 has been preserved in an impressive overall condition. All functions of the complicated manual-wound caliber CH27-70Q are in perfect condition.
Thanks to the following original accessories, this premium collector's wristwatch leaves nothing to be desired:
- the certificate of origin with the date of sale 07.06.2002, reference and serial number,
- additional white gold case back,
- hang tag with reference and movement number,
- leather warranty holder,
- original Patek Philippe brochures,
- setting pin for the moon phase and calendar complications,
- presentation box,
- Patek Philippe leather strap with white gold folding clasp showing the Calatrava cross.
The Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 3970 is an important part of the long tradition of perpetual calendar watches from Patek Philippe. It is all the more astonishing that this model has almost been forgotten in recent years. But now it is rightly moving more and more into the focus of Patek lovers. The present example is convincing all along the line and should satisfy and make the most discerning Patek Philippe collector happy.
