Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 7750 Valjoux 7750 Top Gun

model worn by Tom Cruise in the Top Gun movie

Description
Here you see the first execution of the Porsche Design Chronograph from the 1970s, powered by the Valjoux 7750. In the cult film "Top Gun" from 1986, Tom Cruise wore a specimen of this watch on his wrist.

In 1972, Porsche Design, in collaboration with the Swiss watch manufacturer Orfina, developed a chronograph that is now one of the most iconic vintage wristwatches.

Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 1 - that's the official name - was the epitome of a motorsport chronograph. Its black dial is complicated, but still very legible. The indices are white and the central chrono seconds hand is red. The dial basically looked like the instruments of the Porsche 911 making this chronograph very popular with all fans of the famous sports car, especially with owners of a original Porsche 911 model from the 70s.

The heart of the Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 1 is the newly introduced automatic chronograph caliber Valjoux 7750 with a 30-minute counter, 12-hour totalizer and a running second. The Valjoux 7750 even offers a quickset date and day display - the first of its kind in a chronograph. The vintage collectors love this movement for its reliability, robustness and of course rarity. Its production stopped in 1975.

Another special feature of this watch is the PVD-coated case. While black watches are not uncommon today, the launch of the Porsche Design 7750 caused a sensation in the 1970s. It was the first chronograph with an all-black PVD coating.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was worn by Tom Cruise in the original 1986 film Top Gun. But the watch also found its way back onto Tom Cruise's wrist in the remake of the cult film in 2022.

The black chronograph looks puristic and cool. Some say it's like the dashboard of an F14 cockpit.
