There are two main reasons why the Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph from the 1970s is one of the most iconic and popular chronographs of the 20th century: Tom Cruise wore a copy of the reference 7750 on his wrist in the cult movie "Top Gun". And the black dial is reminiscent of the dashboard of the legendary Porsche 911 sports car.
The chronograph was developed in 1972 by Porsche Design in collaboration with the Swiss watchmaker Orfina. The design of the new timepiece was deliberately based on the dashboard of the Porsche 911, which makes it very popular today among all fans of the famous sports car, especially owners of a Porsche 911 original model from the 70s.
It is powered by the reliable Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement, and in addition to chronograph functions such as the 30-minute counter and 12-hour totalizer, this caliber also offers a date and weekday display with quickset mechanism. Back in 1975, production of this now highly regarded movement was discontinued.
The puristic killer look of this chronograph comes naturally thanks to the black PVD case. Back in the 70s, the Orfina Chronograph was the first watch with a completely black PVD coating, which was tantamount to a sensation. The bracelet also featured black PVD coating to match the case.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was worn by Tom Cruise in the original 1986 film Top Gun. But the watch also found its way back to Tom Cruise's wrist in the remake of that film in 2022.
