Description
This Rolex Explorer 1655 dates back to 1973 and was sold in 1974. The vintage watch scores with its full original accessories and a perfect dial that has developed an attractive patina in markers and hands.

In 1971, Rolex presented the successor to the reference 1016 and it was the Explorer II Ref. 1655 with an additional orange hand and a 24-hour bezel. Due to the fact that the orange hand takes 24 hours for one rotation, this allows the time to be read in 24h format. Rolex developed this feature, for example, for explorers in caves where daylight was lacking as an indicator of day and night. With the Explorer, they could read the current time of day quickly and effortlessly. This also explains why the bezel of the Explorer is non-rotating, unlike the GMT Master.

"Freccione" is the most famous nickname of this Explorer model, which translated from Italian means "big arrow". And indeed, the 24-hour hand is very eye-catching, not only because of its size, but also thanks to its bright orange color.

Here you can see a greatly preserved example from the 1970s with a MK2 dial. The creamy patina of the absolutely evenly aged indexes contrasts nicely with the flawless matte black dial, giving the watch a harmonious look. The second hand has the popular lollipop shape.

This Rolex Explorer 1655 comes in a full set. The original chronometer certificate with punched case number shows the date of sale: 26 January 1974. Also included in the full set: warranty translation, 1974/1975 calendar, green leather warranty holder, presentation box and the outer box.
