Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6098 Ovettone - Pink Gold

SoldRolex is known for its robust and reliable sports watches designed for the extreme environments. Understandably, most timepieces were made of steel. However, Rolex was (and is) also a prestigious luxury watch brand, making watches in gold as early as the 1940s and 1950s, albeit in much smaller numbers compared to steel exampels. The reference 6098 was among the first models to be made in fine yellow or pink gold. While most Rolex gold watches had a yellow gold case, pink gold watches were extremely rare.
The fact that this already rare reference 6098 has a pink gold case makes it very special and extremely collectible. Pink gold, also called rose gold, is a mixture of gold, copper and silver. The seductive luster and unusual color of especially old vintage pink gold watches triggers a special fascination among many watch enthusiasts.
Reference 6098 belongs to the family of Oyster Perpetual "Big Bubblebacks" - the watch that was worn on Mount Everest. While most bubbleback watches at the time had a diameter of 32 to 34 mm, the watch here has a larger case of 36 mm, hence the name "Big Bubbleback". The case is also called "Ovettone" (big egg) and features a larger, rounded back to accommodate the thicker A260 automatic movement.

Dial: wonderfully preserved creamy dial with even patina - no scratches - original tritium - signed "SWISS" at 6 o'clock.
Case: ultra rare pink gold case - 36mm - light wear marks - intact numbers between lugs - intact gold hallmarks on the case.

Summing-Up
This is not a usual Rolex Oyster Perpetual, but an ultra rare pink gold specimen in a large 36mm Ovettone Big Bubbleback case. The future owner can also enjoy the excellent condition of this 70+ year old watch.
