1969 was the year when the legendary diving watch Rolex Submariner was presented in solid gold case for the first time. Officially, the gold version was not given its own reference, but among collectors the reference 1680/8 has become established, where /8 means yellow gold case. After just 10 years, which is short by Rolex standards, production was discontinued in 1979 and there was only the five-digit successor reference 1680x.
The watch becomes a real eye-catcher thanks to the beautiful black and gold color combination. The black dial is the so-called "nipple dial" with its round gold-framed indexes, which were only used on gold Rolex sports watches. The tritium lume in the markers and hands has a warm yellowish patina that beautifuly harmonizes with the gilt print and champagne-colored date disc. In addition to the black dial, the black bezel with its gold-tone numerals and markers also provides a contrasting look.
The first owner of this Submariner bought it in Santiago, Chile. This is evidenced by the original chronometer certificate from the year of sale, 1974, which has been preserved to this day. The document is punched with the serial number and shows the date of sale: April 4, 1974.
