Vulcain Cricket-Nautical S 2321 A

iconic alarm diver - outstanding condition - super rare

Description
The Vulcain Cricket Nautical is a special diver's watch from the 1960s that is known for its mechanical alarm function. The so-called "Cricket" alarm produces an unmistakable sound. It was used for reminding divers of their time to begin returning to the surface and also was described in advertising as a way for divers to communicate with each other while underwater.

The name of the watch comes from the cricket itself. The small animal manages to draw the attention of its conspecifics to its territory by chirping over several metres. Robert Ditisheim, the inventor of the Vulcain Cricket, modelled himself on the cricket and designed a mechanical wristwatch that produces a loud rattling sound. The water resistance of the Cricket Nautical was also remarkable: at 300 metres, it was even higher than some of the Rolex counterparts of the time.

The way the Vulcain Cricket Nautical works is quite unique. If you turn the main crown forwards, the alarm (the alarm spring) is wound. Turning the same crown in the opposite direction winds the watch. Pressing the upper pusher pulls out the main crown to set the alarm. If the main crown is pulled out by hand, it can be used to set the main hands.
