Description
This 1950s Rolex Datejust 6075 in a yellow gold case bears a rare retailer's signature on its dial: Joyeria Riviera. The famous jeweler based in Havana, Cuba, has been in business since 1943 and had the privilege of printing its name on Rolex dials.

The Rolex Datejust first appeared in 1945 as reference 4467, and although it was already referred to as the Datejust in the Rolex catalog, it did not bear the model name on its dial. It was not until the 1950s that the name "Datejust" was actually printed on the dial. This particular Datejust 6075 shows the model name in red letters and dates from 1950, making it one of the first watches to actually bear the model name "Datejust" on the dial.

This watch impresses with its elegant dial with gold dagger indices, fine gold hands and red date disk. The dial, which is over 70 years old, has developed an absolutely fantastic natural patina. The red Datejust lettering and the red date disk are characteristic of Datejusts from the early 1950s. The bezel features the fine fluting that is typical for the early Datejusts.

Vintage collectors also refer to this watch as the "Ovettone" (Italian for "big egg"). The nickname describes a rare category of Rolex watches with domed case backs that were produced in the 1940s and 50s. Just like with the "bubble back" watches, which are considered the predecessors of the Ovettones, the automatic movement required a deeper domed case back.

Summing-Up
The early Datejust references like the 6075 offered here are very rare due to their low production numbers and old age. The retailer signature on the dial of this watch makes it even rarer. And finally, this vintage Datejust offers a lot of charm and remarkable charisma on the wrist.
