The Zenith El Primero Espada 01.0040.418, also known as the El Primero Espada Sub Sea Moonphase, is a milestone in watchmaking history and a coveted collector's item for lovers of vintage watches. While the El Primero is the world's first automatic chronograph, the Espada is the first automatic chronograph with a full calendar and moon phase display.
Two references of this model were produced between around 1972 and 1975: the A7817 and the 01.0040.418 shown here. The two references are visually very similar and differ only in the logo on the dial. The A7817 bears the classic "star" logo, the reference 01.0040.418 the square Zenith logo. The production figures emphasise the rarity of this watch: only around 250 examples of the A7817 and less than 500 examples of the 01.0040.418 were made, making them a real treasure for Zenith collectors.
The silver dial is characterised by its technical complexity and exceptional aesthetics. It features applied hour-markers and three sub-dials: two blue sub-dials for the small seconds and the 30-minute counter, as well as a silver 12-hour totaliser with integrated moon phase. The displays for the day of the week and month are located at 10 and 2 o'clock, while the date with quick setting is at 4 o'clock.
Of particular note is the faded tachymeter scale, which was originally blue and has developed a charming golden patina over the decades. The blue base color remains visible in places, giving the watch an authentic and natural vintage character.
The solid stainless steel case has a distinctive tonneau shape and is fitted with a screw-back, making the watch water-resistant. The watch comes with an original NSA stainless steel bracelet that underlines the Espada's sporty character.
The Zenith also comes with its original black Zenith box.
Its complex mechanism and historical significance make the Espada an essential piece for any collector. With less than 500 pieces produced, it is a rare and fascinating vintage watch that deserves more attention.
