More than almost any other category, military watches embody the unique appeal that vintage timepieces have for collectors. Originally conceived as functional tools, over time they developed into true masterpieces of industrial art. The special requirements of the armed forces led to the development of timepieces that differed fundamentally from civilian models in both technical and aesthetic terms.
One of the best-known and most popular military watches is undoubtedly the Breguet Type XX. Its story begins in 1954, when the French army commissioned a high-precision pilot's watch for navigational purposes. The decisive requirement was the flyback function, which was indispensable for pilots and allowed the chronograph to be reset immediately without having to stop it first.
Although the Type XX was originally designed as a purely military instrument, Breguet later also launched a civilian version, recognizable by the absence of the military engraving on the case back and the Breguet signature on the dial. Today, there are numerous pilot's chronographs on the market, but only a few enjoy such legendary status as the Breguet Type XX. It is considered one of the most iconic pilot's watches ever.
This particular example is an early civilian version of the Type XX and is one of the rare three-register variants that offer a 12-hour totalizer compared to the more common two-register version. The deep black, matt dial is perfectly complemented by the warm, cream-colored tritium luminous mass of the numerals and hands. The stainless steel case features clearly defined facets on the lugs, which have retained their original shape.
The Breguet Type XX is more than just a watch - it is a symbol of precision, tradition and military excellence. Wearing it means wearing a piece of aviation history on your wrist.
