This vintage Leda Chronodate is the perfect watch to spark someone's fascination with the world of vintage watches. A complex movement, an unusual mechanical concept, stunning aesthetics, excellent condition - all at a relatively accessible price.
The world of vintage watches is full of surprises. Even after more than 30 years in the field, we still come across extraordinary pieces that we never knew existed. The Leda Chronodate is certainly one of those discoveries.
This exceptional full-calendar chronograph from the 1950s impresses with its ingenious mechanics: the calendar functions are adjusted via a rotating bezel, an extremely rare solution in this form.
The watch is powered by the Landeron 80 manual winding movement, a reliable caliber used by several brands in their calendar chronographs. What makes the Leda unique, however, is the way the calendar is set. While most Landeron 80 watches rely on tiny pushers on the case flanks, the Leda Chronodate lets the bezel do the job.
When the bezel is turned clockwise, a distinct click is heard as it snaps into one of three positions: date, day, or month. From there, a slight turn in the opposite direction allows the desired value to be set. A fascinating and ingenious system - both technically clever and simply cool.
And then there's the dial: a beautiful salmon triple-register layout with Arabic numerals. Depending on the angle of light, the subdials appear darker than the main dial - creating a striking sense of depth and contrast. The red date window at 6 o’clock draws the eye, while day and month are shown in French through twin windows at 12 o'clock. The subdials are also remarkable: the one at 6 o'clock is larger than those at 3 and 9 o'clock - an unusual but aesthetically balanced composition.
The bold presence of this watch is enhanced by its case. At 38 mm in diameter, it was very large for a 1950s watch. The slim bezel gives it even more presence on the wrist, making the watch appear larger - yet always balanced and stylish.
