For many collectors, this rare Longines Super Compressor Ref. 7494-1 from the early 1960s is one of the most beautiful diver's watches ever made - a fascinating combination of technical innovation and stunning design.
The Super Compressor case, designed by Ervin Piquerez (EPSA), was a significant milestone in the development of dive watches. As the diver goes deeper, the water pressure pushes the caseback more tightly against the mid-case, thereby enhancing the watch's water resistance. The watch features two distinctive, cross-hatched crowns: the upper crown operates the internal rotating dive bezel beneath the acrylic crystal, while the lower crown at 4 o'clock is used for winding and setting the time.
This legendary vintage dive watch also impresses visually, with its generously sized 42 mm case and cleanly structured black dial giving it a commanding presence on the wrist. Over the decades, the luminous markers have developed a warm, even patina that lends the dial a beautiful vintage character - all preserved in remarkably well-maintained condition.
Inside is the Longines automatic caliber 290, a robust movement known for its reliability and precision.
From a collector’s perspective, this Longines Diver embodies everything that defines an important vintage watch: rarity, technical sophistication, iconic design, and an outstanding condition.
