This Elgé Diver is a fascinating timepiece from 1966 – a rare dive watch featuring a tropical dial and the legendary Super Compressor case.
The dial impresses with a beautifully uniform tropical patina – over the decades, the original black surface has developed into a warm chocolate-brown hue, giving the watch a truly unique character. The bold triangular hour markers and the Arabic numerals at 6, 9, and 12 o'clock are filled with original tritium lume, showing a beautifully aged and even patina. Especially charming: the trapezoidal date window with a roulette date wheel – even numbers appear in black, odd numbers in red.
The case is based on the famous Super Compressor design by EPSA (Ervin Piquerez S.A.) – a technical concept in which increasing water pressure enhances the case's water resistance. As diving depth increases, the caseback is pressed more firmly against the gasket – a brilliant solution for dive watches.
The stainless steel case measures 36.5 mm in diameter and has a strong presence on the wrist. The typical twin crowns feature the distinctive cross-hatched pattern, characteristic of Super Compressor models. The upper crown operates the internal bezel, the lower crown sets the time.
The caseback features a nicely engraved diver’s helmet at the center, surrounded by radial engravings: SUPER COMPRESSOR – WATERPROOF 20 ATM – STAINLESS STEEL, along with the serial number 2003. It is very rare to find all of these engravings still fully intact and deep – many examples from this era have lost them due to polishing.
