This Omega Seamaster Chronograph Ref. 176.007 from 1970 is not only highly attractive, but also ranks among the very first automatic chronographs produced by Omega, powered by the Caliber 1040.
The magnificent, perfectly preserved sunburst blue dial defines the character of this watch. Particularly noteworthy is the sub-dial at 9 o’clock with a blue/grey display serving as a day/night indicator. The chronograph minutes are indicated by a central minute hand with a striking orange Flieger tip – a rare and distinctive feature. The functional range is further enhanced by a tachymeter scale for measuring speed as well as a quick-set date display.
The stainless steel case measures 38.5 mm and stands out with its attractive cushion shape. The case back features the finely engraved Seahorse emblem, the Seamaster signature and the Omega logo. The original domed acrylic crystal carries the tiny Omega logo at its center – a detail much appreciated by collectors and one that gives this watch its unmistakable vintage appeal.
This particular example is an early transitional version, recognizable by the double reference numbers on the inside case back: 176.001 and 176.007. While the 176.001 was produced without a tachymeter scale, the 176.007 soon followed with the addition of the scale. During the transition period, case backs from the 176.001 were reused and additionally engraved with the 176.007 reference.
Completing this beautiful timepiece is the original Omega stainless steel bracelet Ref. 1170, which perfectly underlines the authentic vintage charm and originality of this Seamaster.
