The Seafarer was developed by Heuer exclusively for Abercrombie & Fitch and sold from the early 1950s into the 1970s. It was based on John Alden Knight's "Solunar" principle, which determined the best times for hunting, fishing and sailing through the cycles of the sun and moon. From this concept emerged a unique chronograph with a tide indicator – the Seafarer.
Heuer supplied A&F with high-quality chronographs, most often housed in robust, waterproof cases. The Seafarer, however, stood out: its distinctive dial combined colorful subsidiary registers with an indication of high and low tides, setting it apart both functionally and visually.
The dial of the present watch now carries a genuine, honest patina that brings its history to life. At the same time, the vivid colors of the subdials still appear fresh and cool – a fascinating contrast that lends the watch a character all its own.
The watch was powered by a special variant of the Valjoux 72 caliber.
Today, the Seafarer ranks among the most sought-after vintage Heuer models. It combines rarity, colorful design, historical outdoor context, and a truly technical innovation – the tide indicator. It is considered an icon for collectors who appreciate rarity, fantastic condition, sporty functionality paired with distinctive aesthetics.
