The Universal Genève Freccero Ref. 10002 from the early 1950s is one of the most charming vintage watches we have ever seen. That it has survived in such an impressive condition to this day is almost more remarkable than its already rare features.
Particularly noteworthy is the rare rose gold case, which offers an imposing presence on the wrist thanks to its diameter of 37.5 mm that is unusually large for the era. The dial is a flawless "honeycomb" or "waffle" dial, also known as guilloché – one of the most exotic and elaborate finishes ever, highly prized by collectors. Its fine minute track and the small seconds at 6 o’clock with concentric circle pattern emphasize the refinement of the design. This is further complemented by bold Dauphine hands and an applied logo plaque engraved with Universal, one of the early hallmarks of the manufacture.
The rose gold case with its elegant lugs and the domed acrylic crystal enhance the refined vintage look of this watch. On the caseback, the numbers remain crisp and intact.
Inside works the early automatic Caliber 128, which still runs with precision and reliability to this day.
For the dial and case to have survived in such immaculate condition, it is almost certain that this watch spent most of its life away from sunlight, likely hidden in a dry drawer or a bank vault. For newcomers to vintage watch collecting this may be hard to believe – but the fact is: such perfectly preserved vintage dials are hardly ever found today. When they do occasionally surface, they are a true delight for the connoisseur.
