Here we present an original Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806 from 1960, preserved in a beautiful, authentic original condition — a true tool watch from the golden era of aviation chronographs.
The Navitimer was introduced in 1954 and from the very beginning was far more than just a chronograph. Thanks to its legendary slide-rule bezel, pilots were able to calculate essential values such as kilometers, miles and nautical miles directly on the wrist. This functionality quickly established the Navitimer as a trusted companion in the cockpit and an enduring icon of aviation watchmaking.
The Ref. 806 with black dial represents the very first execution of this legendary model. Characteristic of this early version are the black subsidiary dials, from which the collector nickname "All Black" is derived. Later executions featured white sub-dials, making this early dial configuration clearly distinct and especially sought after today.
The present example dates to circa 1960 and impresses with an exceptionally well-preserved dial showing a beautiful, even patina of the original radium luminous material. Only the missing luminous material in the minute hand should be mentioned as a minimal deviation within an otherwise great overall condition. The stainless steel case is preserved in top condition, retaining well-defined lines, bevels and edges — strong indications of an unpolished or very carefully handled watch.
A particularly noteworthy detail of this dial is the fully spelled-out AOPA logo below 12 o’clock. AOPA stands for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and underscores the Navitimer’s close historical connection to aviation. On many examples of this early reference, the AOPA designation is absent altogether. The present, fully spelled-out AOPA signature therefore counts among the rarer executions, adding further historical authenticity and appeal for knowledgeable collectors.
Powering the watch is the proven hand-wound Venus 178 caliber, a reliable and robust chronograph movement highly regarded for its durability and precise operation.
Although the Navitimer is still produced today — clearly inspired by the models of the 1950s and 1960s — and continues to enjoy immense popularity, for vintage enthusiasts the original remains unrivaled. Demand for early Breitling chronographs continues to rise steadily.
Here lies a rare opportunity to acquire an original vintage Navitimer in beautifully preserved condition — and with it, an authentic piece of the fascinating history of one of the world’s most legendary watch manufactures.
