Description
This spectacular Movado Astronic HS360 reference 30.0010.436 from 1969 is far more than just a watch – it is a remarkable testament to one of the most fascinating eras in horological history. A full calendar chronograph in solid 18k yellow gold, fitted with its original 18k gold bracelet.

The mere existence of this model borders on a miracle: only a very small number of so-called “Astronic” examples were ever produced – estimates suggest around 100 pieces. Accordingly, demand has increased significantly in recent years. An example like this, crafted in solid gold and preserved in such impressive condition, can rightfully be described as a small miracle of the vintage world. In our view, this watch unquestionably belongs in a museum.

At its heart beats one of the most important movements ever created: the legendary El Primero calibre 3019 PHF, developed during a brief yet historically significant period of collaboration between Zenith and Movado. As the first serially produced automatic chronograph, the El Primero set new standards and remains to this day one of the pinnacles of mechanical watchmaking, just before the quartz crisis. In this particularly rare configuration, it also combines a full calendar with moonphase and a high-frequency balance operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour – a true technical masterpiece.

The champagne dial is of exceptional harmony. Three subdials for constant seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour counters integrate seamlessly into the overall design. The calendar displays – day at 10 o’clock, month at 2 o’clock, date at 4:30 and the moonphase at 6 o’clock – are as functional as they are aesthetically refined. The applied Movado “top hat” logo at 12 o’clock, the raised hour markers with black inlays and the finely crafted hands add depth and elegance. The red chronograph seconds hand provides a vivid accent, while the tachymeter scale subtly enhances the sporty character. A dial that is simply captivating in its balance.

The solid tonneau-shaped 18k yellow gold case ranks among the most distinctive designs of the late 1960s and gives the watch a powerful, confident presence on the wrist. Not without reason, this form became known under the name “Defy” – a symbol of strength, innovation and the transition into a new era of watch design. This case served as the foundation for a variety of iconic references, often paired with highly expressive dial variations. In the present execution, entirely in solid gold, the design gains an additional layer of luxury – and becomes even rarer.

Equally impressive is the original 18k gold bracelet: solidly constructed, with substantial links and a signed Movado folding clasp – a true statement piece. The moment you hold this watch in your hand, you immediately feel the weight and substance of solid gold, combined with a level of craftsmanship that is second to none.

The overall condition of this watch is excellent and underscores its exceptional collectability. Pieces like this are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide. For us, this Movado Astronic is a museum-worthy collector’s piece with soul, history and a presence that cannot be fully described – it must be experienced on the wrist.
