This rare Breitling Duograph Reference 762 from the 1940s is among the early split-seconds chronographs produced by the brand and combines mechanical excellence with classic elegance.
Breitling played a pioneering role in the development of modern chronographs – first with the introduction of the independent chronograph pusher in 1915 and later with the first two-pusher chronograph in 1934. Building on these innovations, Breitling introduced the “Duograph” in 1943, a highly complicated split-seconds chronograph, also known as a rattrapante. The present Reference 762 belongs to the earliest executions of this historically important model line.
The original dial with its authentic and evenly developed patina offers a wonderful vintage character. The large subsidiary dials, elegant typography and blue tachymeter scale along the outer edge create an aesthetic that is both balanced and highly technical.
An interesting early detail is the patented “PAT” crown used to operate the split-seconds function – a characteristic feature of early Duograph models. The case back furthermore retains deep engraved reference and case numbers, further underlining the authentic condition of the watch. Measuring approximately 36 mm in diameter, the stainless steel case offers a nice wrist presence for its era and impresses with its harmonious proportions.
Inside operates the historically significant Venus Calibre 179 – one of the most renowned classical split-seconds chronograph movements of the 20th century. This elaborately constructed manual-winding movement is still regarded today as a milestone in chronograph engineering and was used by numerous prestigious manufacturers due to its complexity and reliability. The additional split-seconds function allows the simultaneous measurement of two separate time intervals and ranks among the most sophisticated complications in traditional chronograph watchmaking.
This Breitling Duograph beautifully embodies the combination of technical innovation, classic design and historical importance – a rare opportunity for collectors of exceptional vintage split-seconds chronographs.
