This exceptional Tank in 18k yellow gold combines Cartier’s legendary design language with the high-quality watchmaking craftsmanship of Universal Genève – an extremely rare and highly desirable combination.
Founded in 1894, Universal Genève ranks among the most respected Swiss watch manufacturers of the 20th century and gained international recognition for its technical innovation and elegant, finely crafted timepieces. Cartier, meanwhile, had become one of the world’s most important luxury jewelers by the 1960s and 1970s and regularly commissioned watches from renowned Swiss manufacturers exclusively for retail through Cartier boutiques – including Universal Genève.
The present watch was manufactured by Universal Genève for Cartier New York and retailed there during the 1960s. These models exist both as double-signed examples and – as with the present watch – with only the Cartier signature on the dial. Today, these executions are regarded as some of the most fascinating variants, as they combine the elegance and prestige of Cartier with the technical quality of Universal Genève.
The legendary Tank case shape remains one of the most iconic designs in horological history. With its rectangular form, slender proportions and timeless aesthetic, it offers an exceptional presence and elegance on the wrist. The 18k yellow gold case is in very good condition. Particularly appealing are the elegantly curved lugs, which add further refinement to the case design. In addition to the Universal Genève reference and serial numbers, the caseback also bears two Cartier inventory numbers – a wonderful detail and a clear indication of its original retail through Cartier New York. The crown is signed with the UG logo.
The white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and the elegant Cartier signature perfectly embodies the classical aesthetic of the period. The dial is 100 % original and features a natural, authentic patina that beautifully enhances the watch’s vintage character.
Inside beats the high-quality Universal Genève automatic caliber 1-24. The watch is furthermore accompanied by its original and rare 18k yellow gold folding clasp.
