Here we offer you a true vintage classic: the IWC Ingenieur reference 866 from 1969 – one of the most important anti-magnetic wristwatches ever produced.
The history of this legendary model line began in 1954 with the introduction of the first Ingenieur reference 666. Since then, the Ingenieur has stood like almost no other watch for precision, robustness and protection against magnetic fields. Thanks to its special construction consisting of the case, soft-iron inner case and dial, the Ingenieur was protected against magnetic fields of up to 80,000 amperes per meter – more than 16 times the resistance required by the Swiss standard for anti-magnetic wristwatches at the time.
In the mid-1960s, IWC introduced the successor reference 866. Although the reference 666 is historically highly important as the very first Ingenieur, collectors today regard the reference 866 as being fully on par with its predecessor. Not least because it was produced in smaller numbers and is therefore the rarer model today.
With the reference 866, the Ingenieur received an updated design. The case diameter increased to 37 mm, giving the watch a stronger presence on the wrist. At the same time, the new dial layout with its distinctive double hour markers was introduced. For the first time, the hands and indexes were crafted from white gold, making them especially resistant to aging and corrosion. The baton-style hour and minute hands as well as the seconds hand with its characteristic paddle-shaped tip still define the unmistakable appearance of this reference today.
Inside beats the improved automatic caliber 8541B, which delivered even greater precision than its predecessor, the caliber 8521. In addition, the movement features a hacking function, meaning the seconds hand stops when setting the time, allowing for precise synchronization to the exact second. The winding crown was also enlarged and improved on the reference 866.
What makes this example particularly desirable as a collector’s piece, however, is above all its condition. The silver sunburst dial presents itself in remarkably clean condition with a beautiful and even texture. All tritium luminous material in the indexes as well as in all three hands remains original and intact. The large applied IWC logo at 12 o’clock and all dial printing have also remained exceptionally well preserved. Especially characteristic is the “Ingenieur” signature with the small lightning bolt symbol at 6 o’clock – a subtle reference to the watch’s anti-magnetic properties.
The watch is accompanied by a beautiful original Gay Frères stainless steel bracelet from 1972, as confirmed by the date stamp inside the clasp. These high-quality original bracelets have become very rare today and are highly sought-after among collectors.
This IWC Ingenieur 866 combines technical innovation, important model history and timeless elegance in an exceptionally harmonious way. Together with its excellent condition, it becomes a highly attractive and high-quality vintage collector’s watch.
