This Omega Monopusher Chronograph from the early 1940s is powered by the historically important Omega calibre 28.9 CHRO and stands out with a spectacular multicolor two-tone dial.
Introduced in 1932, the calibre 28.9 was Omega’s first true wristwatch chronograph movement and marked the beginning of the brand’s long and important chronograph history. Measuring 28.9 mm in diameter – hence the designation – the movement was specifically developed for sportsmen, pilots and professional users. At the same time, the calibre 28.9 laid the technical foundation for later legendary Omega chronograph movements such as the calibre 33.3, the famous calibre 321 and ultimately the calibre 861 of the Omega “Moonwatch”.
The present example features the rare early monopusher configuration 28.9 CHRO T1, in which all chronograph functions are operated through a single pusher. Only a short time after the introduction of the calibre 28.9, Omega shifted its focus toward the larger calibre 33.3, resulting in low production numbers of the 28.9. Consequently, original surviving examples are exceptionally rare today and rank among the most desirable Omega chronographs of their era.
Particularly fascinating is the multicolor two-tone dial. The variety of colors, scales and contrasts gives the watch a unique appearance. The outer ring as well as the central area are executed in an elegant gray tone, while the black ring in between, together with the black sub dials, creates a striking contrast. The pink tachymeter scale is positioned on the outer gray ring, while the black chapter ring carries the finely divided 1/5 minute scale as well as the bronze-colored numerals. The extraordinary design is further enhanced by the yellow telemeter scale on the gray inner area, adding additional vibrancy and depth to the dial. Despite the complexity of the design, the overall composition remains harmonious, balanced and aesthetically captivating.
The dial is completely original and unrestored. Combined with the rare monopusher configuration and the historically important calibre 28.9, this Omega represents an authentic and extremely rare early chronograph – a museum-worthy collector’s piece and an important chapter in Omega’s chronograph history.
