The Omega Speedmaster reference 105.002-62 is regarded as the rarest six-digit Speedmaster reference ever produced. Manufactured only for a very short period in 1962, the reference represents a transitional chapter in the early history of the Speedmaster line.
The reference 105.002-62 also belongs to the very last generation of so-called pre-Professional Speedmasters. The dial still does not feature the later “Professional” designation, which would only be introduced after NASA certification. As a result, this reference perfectly captures the clean and elegant design language of the earliest Speedmaster models, before the watch began its legendary chapter as a space chronograph.
Finding a 105.002-62 at all today is already extremely difficult — yet locating an honest, untouched and at the same time attractive example is considerably harder. The present watch stands out particularly thanks to its exceptionally well-preserved original dial. The original radium luminous material has aged beautifully over the decades and developed a rich caramel-colored tone that gives the watch a particularly warm vintage appearance.
An especially interesting detail of this Speedmaster is the rare “M.007-DEPORA-G4” engraving on the caseback. It is generally believed that “DEPORA” stands for “DEPartment Olah RAga”, referring to the Indonesian Sports Department. Presumably, these personalized watches were produced for trainers, athletes or participants connected to a particular sporting event.
Adding further importance, this exact reference and engraving variation has been discussed extensively within the collector community and this very watch is also featured in the famous Fero book.
With its extremely short production period, transitional character, pre-Professional dial, beautifully aged radium lume and historically fascinating Indonesian DEPORA engraving, this Omega Speedmaster 105.002-62 undoubtedly ranks among the most exciting and elusive early Speedmaster references ever produced. An exceptional collector’s watch that combines rarity, originality and historical significance in a way that only very few vintage Speedmasters can.
