This rare Patek Philippe reference 2424 from 1950 impresses with its distinctive “Cioccolatone” case, exotic Flame Lugs and exceptionally well-preserved unpolished condition.
Today, the Cioccolatone models are regarded among the most elegant and characterful dress watches produced by Patek Philippe during the mid-20th century. The nickname “Cioccolatone” originally emerged among Italian vintage collectors and has since become established worldwide. The term – Italian for “large chocolate” – refers to the characteristic softly rounded square case shape, reminiscent of a piece of chocolate.
Particularly fascinating on this example are the rare Flame Lugs. The sculptural lugs give the watch an extraordinary presence and beautifully emphasize the elegant Art Deco design language of the era. The case remains in unpolished condition. The light visible oxidation on the surface further highlights the authenticity and untouched character of the watch.
The original enamel dial radiates pure elegance and presents itself with crisp printing. The fine outer minute track, the elegant running seconds at 6 o’clock and the refined feuille hands give the dial a harmonious and sophisticated look.
Powering the watch is the high-grade Patek Philippe caliber 10-200 – one of the finest manual-winding movements of its time. Technically and aesthetically outstanding, the movement demonstrates the exceptional know-how and watchmaking expertise of Patek Philippe during the 1950s.
The watch is accompanied by the original Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, confirming the production year of 1950 as well as the sale of the watch on May 15th, 1951.
