The Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Master Mariner reference E558 from the late 1960s ranks among the rarest and most fascinating dive watches ever produced by the brand. Known to collectors by the nickname "Barracuda", it captivates with its distinctive Super Compressor case, the in-house automatic caliber K883, and its exceptional presence on the wrist.
Produced for only a relatively short period, the E558 is today considered one of the rarest vintage dive watches by Jaeger-LeCoultre. Exceptionally well-preserved examples like this are very rarely seen on the market.
The distinctive stainless steel case features the reference's characteristic angular shape, perfectly reflecting the bold design language of the late 1960s. Manufactured by EPSA as a Super Compressor case, it was originally water-resistant to 200 meters. The internal rotating dive bezel is operated via the upper crown, while the lower crown is used for winding and setting the time – an elegant yet highly functional construction that became one of the defining features of high-quality dive watches of the era.
The original black dial is presented in outstanding, flawless condition. Particularly attractive is the beautifully warm-aged tritium lume on the hour markers, hands, and the triangle of the inner bezel. The even patina gives the watch an authentic vintage character and creates a stunning contrast against the deep black dial. Combined with its clean design and internal rotating bezel, it represents one of the most elegant vintage dive watches of its time.
The case is preserved in excellent condition. Its sharp edges, beautifully preserved satin finish, and original brushing highlight the exceptional quality of this example. Combined with the flawless dial and beautifully aged tritium lume, this Deep Sea Master Mariner is undoubtedly among the best examples (if not the best example) of this reference on the market.
