This Rolex Explorer II reference 16570 is an exceptionally well-preserved example of the sought-after "Chicchi di Mais" dial variant.
Early dials like this one from 1991 were fitted with a special tritium luminous compound that develops a distinctive patina over time. The slightly grainy, warm-colored lume creates a beautiful contrast against the bright white dial. Italian collectors nicknamed this rare dial variant "Chicchi di Mais" ("corn kernels") due to the characteristic color of its tritium lume.
Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the reference 16550, the Explorer II ref. 16570 continued the evolution of the model line. With its independently adjustable second time zone, robust construction, and clean design, it was conceived as a reliable companion for explorers and travelers. To this day, collectors appreciate the reference for its balanced proportions, excellent wearing comfort, and outstanding everyday practicality.
According to the original papers, this particular watch was first sold in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1991. It is accompanied by its original chronometer certificate with punched serial number and country code 018 for Switzerland, the original green Rolex presentation box, and the matching outer box.
Another highlight is the watch's great condition. It shows only light signs of wear and is, in our opinion, in unpolished original condition. The original green Rolex caseback sticker is still present, while the dial remains flawless and displays an attractive patina across all luminous hour markers. Completing the package is the original Oyster bracelet with the correct date code in the clasp corresponding to the year of production.
A rare and highly collectible Explorer II that combines its distinctive dial variant with an honest original condition and excellent everyday wearability.
