This exceptionally rare Rolex Day-Date reference 6611B ranks among the most desirable early executions of the legendary Day-Date. In addition to its unusual matte grey dial, it is accompanied by an ultra-rare Oyster gold bracelet manufactured in South America – a combination that is seldom encountered, even among the most discerning collectors.
The reference 6611B is one of the rarest Day-Date references ever produced. After Rolex introduced the reference 6511 in 1956 as the world's first wristwatch to display the day of the week spelled out in full, the technically improved reference 6611 followed in 1957. Shortly thereafter, Rolex introduced the reference 6611B, equipped with the upgraded caliber 1055. After only about one year in production, it was replaced by the reference 1803, making the 6611B one of the rarest and most sought-after early Day-Date references today.
The 36 mm yellow gold case houses the original matte grey dial, preserved in outstanding condition. The combination of the grey finish with the yellow gold case, gold hour markers, and gold hands creates an exceptionally harmonious and elegant appearance. At the same time, the cream-coloured patina of the day and date discs enhances the watch's authentic character and beautifully reflects its natural ageing over the decades.
Another outstanding highlight is the original 18k yellow gold Oyster bracelet. While most Day-Date models are associated with the iconic President bracelet, early examples fitted with an Oyster gold bracelet are considerably rarer today. This watch is further distinguished by its highly desirable South American bracelet. During the early decades of the Day-Date, Rolex occasionally commissioned authorised local manufacturers to produce bracelets for selected markets, including South America, Mexico, and Japan. The "D'A" stamp inside the clasp refers to D'Agosto, a South American gold bracelet manufacturer that produced bracelets for Rolex. Today, these locally manufactured gold bracelets are exceptionally rare and regarded by collectors as desirable collector's pieces in their own right.
Few early Rolex models combine rarity, originality, and visual appeal at such a high level. The combination of the exceptionally rare reference 6611B, its stunning matte grey dial, and the rare D'Agosto Oyster gold bracelet makes this one of the most fascinating early Day-Date examples we have ever had the pleasure of offering. Finding another watch of comparable originality and preservation would be extraordinarily difficult, even with years of patient searching on the international market.
