Description
This Universal Genève Aero-Compax Ref. 224114 is an exceptionally rare chronograph from 1945. It features an unusually large 38 mm stainless steel case for its era, a screw-down case back and round chronograph pushers.

While these features may seem commonplace today, they were remarkably advanced in the mid-1940s. Most chronographs of the period measured only 33 to 35 mm in diameter, featured rectangular chronograph pushers, and had snap-on case backs. By contrast, the Aero-Compax was among the early chronographs designed with a clear focus on improved water resistance and greater everyday practicality—qualities that were particularly valued by military organizations. Round chronograph pushers replaced the previously common rectangular ones, the screw-down case back provided a more secure seal, and the larger case diameter significantly improved legibility. All of these innovations are brought together in the Aero-Compax offered here.

The defining feature of this early Aero-Compax reference is the so-called Memento dial at 12 o'clock, which is adjusted via the crown at 9 o'clock. At first glance, it might be mistaken for a second time zone. In reality, this complication — protected by two Universal Genève patents — functions as a visual reminder. For example, if a pilot had orders to rendezvous with his squadron at 8:00, he would simply set the Memento dial to that time. While the main time display continued to run normally, the hands of the small sub-dial remained fixed at the selected time, serving as a constant visual reminder of the upcoming appointment.

What we particularly appreciate about this watch is its extraordinary vintage character, created above all by the beautifully aged original silver dial with its naturally developed patina. Equally distinctive are the rare diamond-shaped hour and minute hands. The entire handset is finished in a striking metallic blue, including all four hands of the subsidiary dials.

The vintage charm of this more than 80-year-old chronograph is simply breathtaking.
