The Rolex Turn-O-Graph reference 6609 from 1956 is among the earliest examples of what has become one of Rolex's most legendary models and marks an important milestone in the brand's history. Introduced in 1953, the original Turn-O-Graph was the world's first serially produced wristwatch with a rotating bezel. Shortly thereafter, Rolex incorporated this innovative concept into the Datejust collection. In the United States, the model became known as the "Thunderbird" after being worn by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerobatic squadron and later officially marketed by Rolex under that name. As such, the Turn-O-Graph is widely regarded as the direct predecessor of Rolex's later professional sports watches, including the Submariner and GMT-Master.
This particular example stands out above all for its exceptionally rare anthracite original dial. Originally finished in a deep black galvanic coating, it has developed a beautiful natural charcoal patina over the past seven decades. Depending on the light, the dial shifts between dark anthracite, a subtle metallic sheen and, under magnification, even delicate golden reflections – a type of ageing that collectors often refer to as ghosting. Original dark Rolex dials from this period are considerably rarer than their silver counterparts and are especially sought after by discerning collectors.
Another remarkable feature is the rare two-tone printing of the dial. While the upper signature beneath the Rolex coronet is printed in gold, the chronometer designation in the lower half appears in silver – a highly unusual configuration found only on very few examples. The applied arrow hour markers, original radium lume and elegant dauphine hands further emphasize the distinctive character of this early Turn-O-Graph and perfectly capture the charm of Rolex's golden era of the 1950s.
Inside beats the Rolex automatic caliber 1065 with 25 jewels and the characteristic butterfly rotor. This chronometer-certified movement is still regarded as one of the most robust and reliable vintage Rolex calibers ever produced and exemplifies the exceptional engineering quality that established Rolex's worldwide reputation.
An early Turn-O-Graph in such an authentic configuration, featuring an original dial with such a fascinating natural patina, is encountered only very rarely today. An exceptionally charming vintage Rolex with history, character and undeniable collector appeal.
