This Omega Cosmic Moonphase Reference 2471/2 from 1947 is, for us, the epitome of a classic vintage Omega dress watch. Few other watches from this era combine the understated elegance of the 1940s with such fascinating mechanical complexity. A complete calendar, moonphase and small seconds are paired here with an exceptionally rare black dial – a combination that makes this early Cosmic a truly special collector’s piece.
Omega introduced the Cosmic collection in 1947 and kept it in production until the mid-1950s. At the time, these watches ranked among the most exclusive and complicated models Omega had to offer. What is particularly impressive is how naturally the numerous indications are integrated into the classical design. Despite its complexity, the watch never appears overloaded, but rather elegant and beautifully balanced.
The absolute highlight of this example is undoubtedly its original black dial. Dial condition is a particularly important issue with early Cosmic models. The cases were not water-resistant, and moisture together with almost 80 years of age has left its mark on many surviving examples. As a result, restored or completely refinished dials are frequently encountered today. Finding an authentic original dial is difficult enough – finding an original black dial like the one on this watch is considerably rarer.
And it is precisely this black dial that gives the watch its extraordinary presence. The warm golden printing contrasts beautifully against the deep black background and gives the watch an exceptionally elegant appearance. Particularly attractive is the design of the hour markers, with golden Arabic numerals alternating with applied dot markers. Together with the delicate gold-colored leaf hands, they create the warm and refined aesthetic so characteristic of high-quality wristwatches from the 1940s.
At the same time, the dial is full of fascinating details. Below the Omega signature are the two apertures for the day and month, particularly charming on this example with their Italian-language indications. The date is displayed on a golden scale running around the outer edge of the dial and indicated by a long blued pointer hand. At six o’clock sits the moonphase display with its beautifully aged, warm brownish moonphase disc. It is integrated into the small seconds register, with a delicate seconds hand sweeping across the depiction of the moon and stars. The contrast between the golden details against the black dial is one of the elements that makes this watch so visually captivating.
Inside is the Omega caliber 27 DL PC, a manually wound complete-calendar and moonphase movement manufactured by Lemania. The close cooperation between Omega and Lemania gave Omega access to highly sophisticated complicated movements from one of the leading specialists of its time. From 1948 onwards, the movement originally designated 27 DL PC AM became known as caliber 381 as part of Omega’s new caliber nomenclature.
Naturally, after almost eight decades, the original dial shows some subtle signs of age. For us, however, these small imperfections are part of the watch’s history. Macro photography reveals every tiny trace that is barely noticeable to the naked eye, while on the wrist the dial presents itself as remarkably harmonious and authentic. Far more importantly, there is no restored dial here attempting to conceal the passing decades. This watch is allowed to show its age – and that is a significant part of its charm.
Good and, above all, original Omega Cosmic Moonphase watches are considerably more difficult to find today than the number of examples offered on the market might initially suggest. Many surviving watches have refinished dials. An early Cosmic from the model’s introductory year of 1947 with an original black dial therefore occupies a very special position. For us, this watch embodies exactly what makes a great vintage watch: a significant complication, exceptional design, honest patina and a character that simply cannot be recreated almost 80 years later.
