Description
The Patek Philippe Calatrava Reference 570 is one of the great classics of the Geneva manufacture and today ranks among the most sought-after vintage Patek Philippe models. This example from 1957 combines the timeless elegance of the legendary “Jumbo” Calatrava with a beautiful original dial and an honest patina that gives the watch plenty of authentic vintage charm.

With a diameter of 35 mm, Reference 570 was unusually large for its time. While classic dress watches of the 1940s and 1950s were generally considerably smaller, the 570 already offered remarkably generous proportions. It is therefore no surprise that collectors today refer to it as the “Jumbo” or “Oversized” Calatrava. This size also makes the watch exceptionally wearable by modern standards and has helped establish Reference 570 as one of the most desirable classic Calatravas.

A particular highlight of this example is its original cream-colored dial with the classic black enamel “Patek Philippe Genève” signature. With this elaborate technique, the lettering was not simply printed onto the surface: the letters were finely engraved into the dial, filled with black enamel and subsequently fired. This creates the characteristic deep-black, crisp and subtly raised appearance of the lettering, which is particularly impressive when viewed under magnification. This so-called hard-enamel signature is a characteristic detail of high-quality Patek Philippe dials from this period and is highly appreciated by collectors today. Together with the applied gold hour markers, elegant dauphine hands and delicate outer minute track, it creates the beautifully restrained and balanced appearance of a classic Calatrava. Over the decades, the dial has developed an authentic and harmonious patina that perfectly complements the overall character of the watch.

The solid 18k yellow gold case features the characteristically slim profile of Reference 570 with long, elegantly curved lugs. Here, too, the watch proudly shows its age: this is no safe queen, but rather a classic vintage watch that was clearly enjoyed on the wrist throughout its life. For us, this is an essential part of its appeal. The signs of wear and naturally developed patina give the watch the warm and authentic presence one hopes to find in an almost 70-year-old Patek Philippe.

The watch is accompanied by a recent Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives documenting its historical details. According to the extract, Reference 570 was manufactured in 1957 and sold on August 26, 1958. It further confirms the 18k yellow gold case and the manually wound caliber 27 SC with sweep seconds.
