Description
This Rolex Datejust reference 1601 from 1974 is one of those vintage watches whose special appeal lies not only in the watch itself, but above all in its exceptional condition and complete provenance. Crafted in 18k yellow gold and fitted with a rare blue sunburst dial, this example has survived in virtually unworn condition. Together with its extensive original full set, it represents a complete package that is exceptionally difficult to find today in a Datejust more than 50 years old.

The blue Sigma dial creates a particularly beautiful contrast with the warm tone of the yellow-gold case. Depending on the light, its fine sunburst finish shifts from a deep dark blue to brighter shades. Applied gold hour markers, the applied Rolex coronet and gold-tone hands complement the case beautifully and give the watch an exceptionally harmonious appearance. The characteristic date display at 3 o’clock with Cyclops lens and the fluted bezel complete the classic Datejust design.

Particularly remarkable is the condition of the 18k yellow-gold case. The watch appears to have been worn only very sparingly over the decades and, in our assessment, remains in an exceptional condition of approximately 9.5 out of 10. The geometry of the Oyster case is superbly preserved, with strong, sharply defined lugs that still clearly retain their original factory finish. Such an untouched case on a gold Datejust of this age is exceptionally rare.

Even the original Rolex crocodile leather strap has survived, further emphasizing the remarkably complete nature of this example. It retains its original Rolex markings and is fitted with the matching original Rolex gold buckle. This is particularly noteworthy, as straps are naturally subject to wear and are among the components most commonly replaced over the lifetime of a vintage watch.

Another highlight is the extensive original accessories. The full set includes the original green Rolex box with its presentation packaging, the green Rolex document wallet, the Rolex Chronometer Certificate, the International Service Guarantee card, as well as the period Rolex “Your Rolex Oyster” booklet. Of particular importance to collectors is the preserved Chronometer Certificate stamped by the original retailer, Alexanders Ltd., 41–43 High Street, Reigate, Surrey. Further original paperwork and documents from the original delivery are also included. Preserved together in this form, the set provides a rare glimpse into how a high-end Rolex was originally delivered in the mid-1970s.

Reference 1601 is one of the great classics in Rolex history. Its Oyster case, fluted bezel, automatic chronometer movement and characteristic date display established a design that Rolex would refine only gradually over the following decades. In solid yellow gold, the Datejust has an elegant and substantial presence while retaining the functional clarity so characteristic of Rolex.

This Datejust is therefore much more than simply a beautiful vintage Rolex. The rare blue sunburst dial, the virtually untouched 18k gold case, the original Rolex crocodile leather strap and, above all, the complete full set make this an example that would be extremely difficult to find again in comparable condition. A classic Rolex to keep – and a watch that can easily be passed down through generations.
