Description
This Movado Calendograf Reference 14820 from the 1940s is a rare version of one of the manufacture’s early calendar models. Examples of Reference 14820 are rarely encountered today – particularly in such a well-preserved and original condition.

Movado introduced the Calendograf as early as 1938. With its display of the day, date and month, the model was among the early representatives of the calendar wristwatch and played a pioneering role within this still relatively young category of watches.

Particularly noteworthy is the original two-tone dial, which has survived in excellent condition after around 80 years. The different silver-toned sections give the dial a clearly defined structure and are complemented by the blue outer date scale and recessed small seconds at 6 o’clock. A light and authentic patina gives the dial an appropriate historic character without detracting from its original appearance. Particularly attractive are the applied Arabic hour numerals in the classic Breguet style – a design feature that is especially appreciated and sought after among collectors of early vintage watches.

The stainless-steel case is likewise preserved in exceptionally good condition. Measuring 34 mm in diameter, it offers well-balanced proportions for a calendar watch of this period and appears considerably larger on the wrist thanks to its long, prominently flared lugs. Their unusual “Turtle” shape gives the case a particularly distinctive appearance. Further characteristic details include the finely ribbed case sides and stepped bezel, which underline the elaborate construction of the case.

Inside is the Movado Calibre 475, a manually wound movement from the manufacture’s own 470 calibre family. It forms the technical basis of the Calendograf and controls the complete calendar displaying the day, date and month in addition to the time. The use of Movado’s own calibre and the implementation of a complete calendar function as early as the late 1930s demonstrate the technical ambitions of the manufacture during this period.

The watch is accompanied by an original Movado box as well as an original Movado brochure, in which the introduction of the Calendograf in 1938 is documented. The leather strap is also fitted with an original Movado buckle. Together with its excellent overall condition and rare two-tone dial, this makes for an unusually complete and highly collectible example of this early Movado calendar model.
