Universal Genève Uni-Compax 22111 Like NOS

This Universal Genève Uni-Compax Reference 22111 is an exceptionally well-preserved example of the manufacture’s classic two-register chronograph. With its square stainless-steel case, light-colored dial and gold-tone markers, it has an unusually elegant appearance for a chronograph of this period. Its condition is particularly remarkable: in our assessment, the watch has seen very little wear over the decades and remains today in near-mint, unpolished condition.

The square stainless-steel case measures 26 × 26 mm and is distinguished by its clean lines, flat lugs and rectangular chronograph pushers. Its original geometry is exceptionally well preserved, with all edges and surfaces remaining remarkably sharp and well defined. The deeply stamped reference and serial numbers on the caseback are likewise fully intact and clearly legible. The serial number in the 781xxx range dates the watch to approximately 1940/41.

The original light-colored dial is particularly attractive and has survived in exceptional condition, showing only a very light and authentic patina. The applied gold-tone hour markers and large Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 create a beautiful contrast against the light background. The classic “Universal Genève” and “Uni-Compax” signatures complete a design that appears remarkably modern for its time.

Inside is the Universal Genève Caliber 289, a compact manually wound chronograph movement introduced in 1937. Measuring just 23.30 mm in diameter and 5.55 mm in height, it was remarkably compact for its time and allowed Universal Genève to produce chronographs with particularly small cases. The caliber features 17 jewels, a Breguet hairspring and traditional column-wheel chronograph control. Unlike other Universal/Martel chronograph families, the Caliber 289 was produced exclusively in this size and with a two-register configuration. Universal Genève nevertheless used the movement in a variety of case designs, including round, square and other unusually shaped models.

It is precisely the combination of the small square stainless-steel case, the exceptionally well-preserved dial and the historic Caliber 289 that makes this Uni-Compax such an appealing example. The package is completed by its original Universal Genève pin buckle.
