Rolex Submariner 6536/1 Unpolished Case - Mirror Dial

This ultra-rare and highly collectible Rolex Submariner Reference 6536-1 from 1959 comes from the final production batch of the early “Small Crown” Submariner and combines several features that make this particular configuration especially interesting to collectors: the deep black, exceptionally well-preserved mirror dial, the characteristic bezel with red triangle and minute hashes for the first 15 minutes, and, above all, a remarkably well-preserved, unpolished case. In such an authentic and coherent overall configuration, a 6536-1 is extremely difficult to find today.

Reference 6536-1 belongs to the early generations of the Rolex Submariner and was produced for only a very short period of 2-3 years. During these few years, several variations appeared, differing in small but, for collectors, crucial details. While earlier examples were fitted with bezels without minute hashes and sometimes featured a silver triangle, the final examples in the 399xxx serial range already display the red triangle combined with the so-called “hash marks” for the first 15 minutes. This exact configuration is documented for the final production batch from 1959.

The absolute highlight of this example is its original black dial. On the late 6536-1, the dial surface became noticeably glossier than on earlier versions. On this exceptionally well-preserved example, the deep black lacquer has retained a mirror-like surface – an appearance commonly referred to by vintage Rolex collectors as a “Mirror Dial”. The gilt lettering and minute track, together with the beautifully aged luminous hour markers, create a striking contrast against the deep black surface and give the watch the unmistakable character of an early Submariner. Studies of different 6536-1 examples also confirm that the late watches from the 399xxx serial range are particularly notable for their highly glossy dials.

Equally characteristic is the original configuration of the rotating bezel. The black insert features the red triangle at 12 o’clock together with minute hashes for the first 15 minutes. This combination clearly distinguishes the final series from earlier 6536-1 examples: watches from 1957 can be found with both silver and red triangles, but still without these “hash marks”. For the 399xxx series from 1959, however, precisely the combination seen on this watch – a red triangle and minute hashes – is documented.

Particularly noteworthy is the condition of the stainless-steel case. The case is unpolished, retaining its original shape with strong lugs and clearly preserved contours. For an early Submariner, originally conceived as a functional diving instrument and therefore often subjected to considerable wear, finding a case in such original condition is exceptional today. The existing signs of wear form part of the watch’s history and have not been removed through later polishing. For a collector, this untouched case geometry is considerably more desirable than the cosmetically improved appearance of a refinished case.

Inside Reference 6536-1 is the automatic Rolex Calibre 1030, which was used throughout the production of this reference. The smaller winding crown is one of the defining characteristics of the 6536-1 and, together with later references such as the 5508, is the reason these watches are commonly referred to today as “Small Crown Submariners”.

Overall, the appeal of this Rolex Submariner 6536-1 lies not in one rare feature alone, but in the exceptional coherence of the entire watch. The 399xxx serial range, highly glossy mirror dial, red triangle bezel with minute hashes and, most importantly, the unpolished case all correspond with the documented configuration of the final production batch. Combined with its exceptional condition, the result is a remarkably authentic early Submariner of a quality that is extremely difficult to find today.
