Description ▲
There are vintage watches whose fascination goes far beyond their technical or monetary value. Watches that have not spent decades untouched in a safe, but were actually worn, accompanying their owners through everyday life and developing a story of their own. This Rolex Explorer Reference 1016 from 1967 is a wonderful example. With its exceptionally beautiful, deep black gilt dial and stainless steel case bearing the marks of almost six decades, it embodies the authenticity that makes historic sports watches so appealing. An Explorer that has truly lived, and whose character we deliberately chose to preserve.

Introduced in 1959, the Rolex Explorer Reference 1016 became one of the most iconic sports watches in the brand's history. Its understated design, robust construction, and exceptional legibility made it a reliable companion for everyday wear and adventure alike. Particularly sought-after today are the early examples featuring Gilt dials, with gold-colored lettering set against a deep black, glossy surface. This distinctive dial finish gradually disappeared during the second half of the 1960s, replaced by matte black dials with white printing.

The present example, bearing serial number 1506xxx, dates from this transitional period and belongs to the final generation of gilt-dial Explorers. It features the rare Type 6 dial, distinguished by the characteristic slanted serifs on the letter "E" in the Rolex signature and the Open Chapter design, with no enclosing ring around the outer minute track. The "SWISS – T < 25" designation at six o'clock is also correct for this late execution, indicating the use of tritium luminous material.

The absolute highlight of this Explorer is undoubtedly its original gilt dial. The deep black, glossy surface has survived almost 60 years in remarkably beautiful condition, retaining the fascinating depth that makes these early Rolex dials so desirable. Depending on the angle of the light, the gold-colored lettering and minute markers reveal a subtle, almost floating brilliance. The beautifully preserved black surface contrasts with the warm, cream-colored patina of the original tritium hour markers and Mercedes hands, creating an exceptionally harmonious vintage appearance.

A striking contrast to this beautifully preserved dial is provided by the 36 mm stainless steel case. Numerous scratches, small nicks, and signs of wear tell the story of a watch that has genuinely been worn over the decades. And that is precisely why we decided not to refinish it. Polishing could have removed many of these marks, but it would also have erased part of the watch's history. We wanted to preserve this Explorer exactly as it has evolved over time: honest, authentic, and full of character. To us, these signs of wear are not imperfections to be corrected, but part of what makes this particular watch so special.

This contrast between the remarkably well-preserved gilt dial and the visibly worn case gives the watch its unmistakable personality. It is not a carefully restored vintage Rolex made to look as though time has stood still. It is an authentic example that has retained both its original beauty and the evidence of a life well lived.

The remaining components fit beautifully into this overall picture. The inside of the original stainless steel caseback bears Reference 1016 and the date marking "VI.66", which corresponds well with the serial number 1506xxx. Inside beats an automatic Rolex chronometer movement from the renowned 15xx caliber family. The watch is completed by a period-correct Rolex Oyster bracelet manufactured by Gay Frères, with a clasp dated 1967. Its authentic signs of wear complement the condition of the case.

Who wore this Explorer over the past six decades? Where has it been, and what moments has it witnessed? We will probably never know. But the traces of its past are still there, and that is part of its fascination.

This Rolex Explorer 1016 is not intended for someone seeking flawless surfaces or the shine of a freshly restored vintage watch. It is a watch for collectors who appreciate originality, historical significance, and the unmistakable character that only decades of genuine use can create. With its rare, beautifully preserved Type 6 Gilt dial, period-correct components, and deliberately untouched case, it represents a particularly authentic example of the final gilt-dial Explorer generation.
