This Wakmann Triple Date Chronograph from around 1970 is a particularly attractive example of a classic vintage calendar chronograph. Its contrasting reverse-panda dial, silver-white date ring, distinctive hour markers, and red chronograph hand come together to create a beautiful, sporty yet elegant design. This distinctive appearance is further enhanced by the generously proportioned stainless steel case, measuring 39.5 mm in diameter – an exceptionally large size for its era.
Inside beats the manually wound Valjoux 730, a high-quality column-wheel chronograph movement from the famous Valjoux 72 family. In addition to its classic chronograph function, it features a complete calendar displaying the day of the week, month, and date. The stainless steel case was manufactured in Switzerland by Charles Gigandet, as confirmed by the corresponding signature on the inside of the screw-down case back. The exterior features the characteristic sailing ship engraving along with the reference number 73.1307.70.
Particularly pleasing is the excellent overall condition of this chronograph. The black dial is virtually flawless, showing a subtle, naturally developed patina that enhances its authentic vintage character. The stainless steel case is equally impressive, retaining strong lugs, well-preserved contours, and all its original engravings.
Wakmann was particularly active in the American market and maintained close business relationships with several Swiss watch manufacturers, including Breitling. Today, the Triple Date Chronographs rank among the brand's best-known historical models. This particular example perfectly demonstrates just how much fascination a vintage watch can offer beyond the major, well-established brands. A generously sized stainless steel case, a beautiful reverse-panda dial, and a sophisticated column-wheel chronograph movement with a complete calendar – a combination that often costs several times as much when found in comparable chronographs from more prestigious manufacturers. An exceptionally attractive vintage watch that offers remarkable value for money considering its quality, mechanical complexity, and overall appeal.
