This 1964 Rolex Submariner 5513 PCG with black glossy dial is a very special and rare collector's watch. The world of Vintage Rolex is all about details. This watch also has some special features which are sought-after by vintage Rolex collectors ...
The production of the Submariner 5513 started in 1962/63. The short period between 1963 and 1964 is a very unique one in the history of the Submariner. In this particular one year, one can explore many intersections between different configurations of the Submariner. The very early watches (until 1963) had the following characteristics:
- Serial numbers from approx. 9xx.xxx
- Swiss-only dials: "SWISS" inscription at 6 o'clock, which stands for radium luminescent
- PCG (pointed crown guards)
- chapter ring dial: a circle connecting the minute markers
From about 1964/65:
- Serial numbers from approx. 1.09x.xxx
- "SWISS - T<25" inscription: stands for tritium lume
- non-chapter ring dial
The serial number 1.00x.xxx of this 5513 is pretty much in between. The stamped date inside the case back gives the approximate information about the year of manufacture of the watch. With this particular Submariner it's "III 63" (third quarter 1963). This date can be up to a year or two older than the watch itself, as Rolex has produced the case backs in batches and used them up as needed. So the year of production of this Submariner is exactly in the transition period between the end of 1963 and 1964. All in all: we have here a very early and rare example with "SWISS - T<25" inscription on the non-chapter dial, but still with pointed crown guards.
The watch is in a great overall condition. The glossy black dial has been excellently preserved. Its minimal signs of aging make the watch very honest and authentic. The luminous material has an evenly distributed creamy color. The hour markers and hands still glow under light. This is ensured by the tritium/zinc-sulfide luminescent material, which was used at the beginning of the 1960s during the short transitional period from radium to tritium. The dial is called gilt, which means that the lettering written in gold font rather than white. The rotating black bezel is in very good condition. The pearl in the triangle at 12 o'clock is missing. The Rolex caliber 1530 has been checked and runs flawlessly.
The Rolex Submariner is undoubtedly one of the most successful Rolex models. The key to success is the technical development and the sporty elegance of the Submariner. This is a chance to own a very special and extremely rare iconic watch.
