Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 Double Red MK2

tropical dial - thin case - unpolished

Description
This fine Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 is an extremely rare Double Red MK2 version from 1968 with a tropical dial, thin case and a patent pending Oyster bracelet.

The Sea-Dweller is the undisputed icon among professional diving watches of the 20th century. The long history of this legendary Rolex model begins in 1967 when Rolex developed a new version of the Submariner for the French company COMEX and named it "Sea-Dweller".

The first versions showed two red lines "SEA-DWELLER" and "SUBMARINER 2000" at 6 o'clock, which is why they are now called "Double Red Sea-Dweller". With the introduction of the Sea Dweller 1665 "Great White", "Submariner" disappeared from the dial and the Sea-Dweller became an independent Rolex model. The DRSD was produced between 1967 and 1977.

Here you can see an early MK2 version of the Double Red Sea-Dweller from 1968. The watch has a tropical dial that that turned brown over the years. Vintage enthusiasts call them "chocolate dials". This effect is only seen with the MK2 execution, which is why it is extremely sought-after. The condition of the dial presented here is astonishing good, which makes this watch even more valuable and rare.

Another rare feature of this Sea-Dweller is the so-called "thin case". For the early versions, Rolex used the case of the Submariner 5513 and built the helium valve into the case. Later on, a special Sea-Dweller case was produced, that was thicker than the Submariner case.

The condition of the case of this vintage Sea-Dweller is excellent. The engravings on the case back and the lugs are sharp. The case has natural signs of wear, but in our opinion it has never been polished - a dream condition for every discerning vintage collector. The last three digits of the serial number are engraved on the inside of the case cover. This feature is typical of old Sea-Dwellers should prevent the case covers from being mixed up. You can also find the reference number 1665 and the date stamp IV/67 inside the case back. The Oyster bracelet is the reference 9315 with folded links and 580 end links. The diver extension of the bracelet is engraved "Patent Pending".

This Rolex Double Red Sea-Dweller 1665 is an extremely rare and exceptional vintage watch that will satisfy any discerning collector.
