This Universal Genève Polerouter from 1956 is, in all likelihood, a unique piece. Its dial appears to be based on a medallion or coin and was most likely created for a Thai government ministry, as suggested by the inscription in Thai.
The Polerouter was introduced by Universal Genève in 1954 to commemorate the first flight of Scandinavian Airlines over the North Pole — a historic milestone that also gave the model its name. Its elegant lines and beautifully balanced case are accentuated by the distinctive Bombe lugs, which give the watch its refined character.
This early example is powered by the in-house calibre 138SS — a robust automatic movement featuring a so-called "bumper" rotor, which predates the brand's later and better-known micro-rotor calibre 215.
A truly fascinating piece that unites Universal Genève's watchmaking legacy with Southeast Asian state symbolism — making it a culturally significant collector's piece.
